Mastitis

Mastitis, an inflammation of the udder (mammary gland), is predominantly caused by bacterial infections in New Zealand. This painful condition affects dairy cattle and can lead to significant economic losses due to decreased milk production and elevated somatic cell count (SCC) grades.

Our team of dedicated veterinarians specializes in addressing mastitis and managing SCC levels. Our services include:

Grade Busting: If your herd is grading due to high SCC, our comprehensive mastitis investigation can help. This process may involve:

  • On-site milking visits

  • Detailed SCC data analysis

  • Rapid Mastitis Testing (RMT)

SCC Reduction: To lower your overall SCC, we offer a range of services, including:

  • Thorough SCC analysis

  • Testing suspect animals for Staphylococcus aureus

    • This can be done to individual animals or a selection of animals at herd testing (25 minimum)

  • Assisting with culling or management decisions

  • Providing treatment options

We provide Mastatest machine installation directly in your cow sheds, ensuring rapid culture results for precise treatment targeting specific organisms.

We offer a teat-scoring service to help identify problem animals. Cracked and damaged teat-ends allow for areas where bacteria can hide and multiply. Cracked and damaged teat-ends can lead to increased rates of mastitis, and cause pain at milking

Our expertise ensures effective mastitis management, promoting the health of your herd and improving your dairy operation’s productivity and profitability.
